CHAPTER FIFTEEN

There were problems. Not the kind Claudia usually had to deal with, but they were there.

Security was all around them. The drink had to be gotten from the on-site bar. There weren’t any drinking establishments for twenty miles, but that didn’t make Claudia feel any better.

Kristen was watching her too, and it was giving her the same feeling as the cameras. There were even cameras in the bar to keep track of the workers while they were drinking on the premises.

Did they have to cover everything? Besides, they weren’t standard security cameras. They also picked up on UV and had infrared built in, so they kept track of everything everyone was doing. She hadn’t seen security this tight outside a casino in years. Even the Pentagon wasn’t this paranoid about the people on its premises. In most areas, anyway.

Having eyes on her made her neck prickle, an instinct she’d learned to listen to over the years. Instead of ordering her usual scotch, she got a gin and tonic and a water. When Kristen raised an eyebrow, she said it was because she was still hung over from the night before.

It was an intelligence operative trick she’d learned from an older guy who had been a Cold War spy. When she was expected to drink in a situation where she needed to keep her wits about her, Claudia ordered something clear and a drink of water. She could sip the drink and take a sip of the water, and nobody would notice that the water was getting fuller while the drink was getting emptier since she would be drinking from the water too.

Not a foolproof method, but it would be enough to keep Kristen from noticing. She hit her drink, but it was now diluted by the ice melting, so she would not drink too much. It was gross, but her mind was on other matters.

The other people in the bar looked uncomfortable as well. Claudia couldn’t tell if she was the one they were watching out of the corners of their eyes or if it was Kristen, although her friend was acting like nothing was wrong.

It was plausible that the woman was still as socially inept as she had been and didn’t notice. It was just as possible that the woman knew they were watching her and was ignoring them, or she didn’t care.

“I’m getting paranoid,” Claudia whispered under her breath as Kristen went to get the next round of drinks. She’d thought booze might help the feeling, but there was still something wrong. Something was keeping as close an eye on the factory as the Workshop did, but she didn’t trust Kristen’s instincts like she trusted Kris’.

It had taken a while to get used to having the Workshop watch everything. She’d had that same feeling then as she was having now, only this factory made computer chips.

Claudia was suspicious, but she would not get confirmation. She couldn’t just ask Kristen. Either her friend knew nothing about it and
